By the end of the semester we will have directly experienced India's twelve major public health issues and how they are being addressed. Future field visits include a Leprosy Hospital, Integrated Child Development Services, a water treatment plant, a center for the mentally challenged, and a TB treatment center. India as an Idea An overview of the historical events, cultures, political systems, people, etc that had the most impact on the identity of modern Indian society. (Required course for study abroad students in the Geopolitics department.) Yoga and Meditation Regional Security in South Asia Looks at the emerging regional security environment of South Asia (role of nuclear weapons, threat perceptions, political and economic instabilities within S.A. countries, etc.) and India’s National Security and Defense Management (role of armed forces, strategic technologies, defense policies/budgets, etc.). | Indian Philosophy & Intellectual Traditions Understanding the fundamentals of Indian philosophy through the study of the ancient Sanskrit texts – specifically the Vedas and Upanis’ads – and focusing on the themes of the Self found in the texts. Hindi Language I Ayurvedic Medicine Ayurveda is a form of Indian traditional healing that has been practiced for over 5000 years. In addition to the theory-based classes we have a weekly practical lab that teaches massage techniques as methods of healing and prevention. The best part: all of the Ayurveda students are given unlimited access to free massage treatments so that we can "become as familiar as possible with the procedures." I never thought I would find myself in a situation where I would want to spend my free time 'studying' medicine. |
